The vessel is a form and symbolic concept that I have been interested in since the early days of my travels in Pre-Hispanic Mexico and Central America. The vessel is a form that receives and gives. The contemporary Maya of Guatemala sacrifice food in simple plastic bowls at sacred ceremonial sites just as their forbearers sacrificed blood in elaborate ceremonies to show respect and honor to the gods that give all. These vessels represent relationships. Some are empty; other vessels have vines with flowers in various states of growth and decline. The expressions are obvious but also carry an undercurrent of archetypal symbolism. How do we relate to the world around us, what do we take, what do we give?
